A broken spring is the number one reason a garage door won’t open in the Black Hills. You’re already late, the door won’t budge, and the opener is just sitting there humming. Nine times out of ten, that’s a snapped torsion spring.
We keep replacement springs, cables, and hardware on the truck, so 99% of the time your door is going up and down before we leave. Flat $140/hr with a one-hour minimum. Every repair includes a full door service: we check your other spring, lube the hinges and rollers, and tighten whatever’s worked loose. We don’t put a band-aid on it.
Serving Rapid City, the Black Hills, Spearfish, Sturgis, Gillette, Sundance, Moorcroft, and Sheridan.
If your door won't open and the opener is running but nothing's moving, it's almost always a snapped torsion spring. Most common call we get.
Rollers jump the track when something hits the door or the hardware wears out. Don't force it. Running a door off track turns a quick fix into a bigger one.
Sometimes it's not the door at all. Openers wear out, logic boards go, sensors get knocked out of alignment. We bring a voltmeter and figure out whether it needs a repair or a replacement.
No runaround. Just what you actually need to know.
Walk over and look at the spring above the door. If there's a visible gap in that long horizontal spring, it snapped. The other giveaway is a loud bang earlier in the day — most people think someone hit their garage. If the opener runs but the door won't move, that's almost always it. Do not keep forcing it. Without a working spring, the opener is trying to lift 150–200 lbs on its own and it wasn't built for that. Top signs your spring is failing How to open a door with a broken spring
We charge a flat $140/hr with a one-hour minimum. Most spring replacements are done in 1–2 hours, parts included. We replace both springs when one breaks — they wear together, so if one snapped the other isn't far behind. That's not an upsell, that's just how it works. What spring replacement typically costs Spring replacement service
We get this a lot. Torsion springs store an enormous amount of energy under tension. If one slips during winding it can cause serious injury. We're not saying that to scare up business — we're saying it because we've seen the aftermath. Leave this one to us. Should you DIY a spring replacement? Our garage door repair service
Check the photo eye sensors first — the little lasers at the bottom of each side of the door. Both indicator lights should be solid. If one is blinking, wipe them off and nudge until they align. If that's not it, the logic board in the opener can fail over time — they get old, dusty, and the components go. That's something we need to diagnose on-site with a voltmeter.
